Well, being adventurous sometime means being brave? My adrenaline junkie friend explained it differently – when he wants to relax he goes canoeing on rivers. Never did he hear of anyone drowning on one of the activity companies that offer canoeing trips to the public – bad for return business he says.

Best teambuilding exercise he ever attended – time for yourself in an unknown environment and time with colleagues negotiating a few rapids “… get your feet wet, man! You will learn something about yourself and your work-friends.”

Surprisingly enough, there is various river adventure companies across South –Africa and one may be near you. Do a few hours or day-trip to ensure it is something you would like to do again. These places can put you on the right river (also check this link on the same topic):

The Great Usuthu River in Swaziland could be a bit extreme for a first timer. It has the best white water south of the Zambezi, thundering grade 4 rapids and with starting points near Mbabane and Manzini. Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary has accommodation from a luxury lodge, self-catering or backpackers accommodation. Contact Swazi Trails at +268-528 3943 or +268-416 2180, to find out more about this great adventure.

Go to Parys – in the Free State – for a first time or fun for the whole family. The Malachite Trail on the Vaal River is an easy paddle with many bird species. Otters and monkeys may be seen around the channels and islands. Contact the Riverman for more info at +2756-818 1814.

KwaZulu Natal has excellent canoeing adventures – the Inanda Dam set within the scenic Valley of a Thousand Hills or the premier stretch of water of the Shongweni Dam, just of the N3 taking the Assegaai off-ramp. Get into it on your own time and undisturbed; set a comfortable pace for yourself. For more info on both, phone +2731-765 7724.
