In South Africa the 1st of May is not only Labour Day and a public holiday. It marks the opening of the official hunting season.

Rifles have been zeroed on shooting ranges, hunting bows checked and re-checked, ammunition bought, knifes sharpened. In the South African hunting fraternity best shot placement on the different animals has been discussed again and again, calibre and load for the hunt, the menus worked out for the campfire food.

Even bookings have been made in advance and deposits paid. But some of the hunters haven’t booked yet. They don’t know where to go and who to contact. This may prove usefull: (click on) Limpopo Hunting gives a list of hunting destinations with contact detail.

Hunting can be done in all the South African provinces. Here is a couple of places in other areas:

Driekoppen Safaris in North East Freestate with luxury accommodation for the biltong and trophy hunter, rifle or bow. Lots of game. +2758 913 3355 | +2784 514 6376 | 3hoek@lantic.net.

Lasarus Game Farm near Mosselbay with 17 species for trophy/biltong, rifle/bow. +2782 443 1147 | lasarus@huntsafari.co.za.

Kalahari hunting can be done at McCarthy’s Rest. Koedoe, Eland, Blesbok, Rooibok, Springbok and Zebra. Day fee R350 pp. Contact Eumarie during office hours @ +2756 514 9304 or Gert @ +2782 449 3774.

To hunt near Beaufort-West in the Karoo at the Nuweveld Berge, visit www.badshoek.co.za. They have 10 huntable species on 10,000 ha.

Before leaving for your hunt, be sure that all the legal procedures regarding firearms and transportation of meat and hides have been finalised. Phone Quinton Jordaan Attorneys if you have any questions regarding this - +2782 805 0674.
