For a lot of us, the thought of vacations does not only mean lazing on the beach, picnics in the park, chilling… Instead it sets the mind racing, coming up with ideas for fantastic adventure holidays that will get your heart pumping faster, probably involve some risk-taking, living on the edge – holidays guaranteed to be anything but boring.
Perhaps some abseiling, mountaineering or some serious rock-climbing will do it for you on your next adventure holidays – living life on the edge. Or maybe something a little more racy to get your adrenaline going – maybe kayaking, river rafting or white-water rafting. If you’ve got what it takes, perhaps scuba diving – returning to the ocean, exploring a different world beneath the waves.
If you’re feeling brave, perhaps some shark-cage diving. Those creatures can be big man, and those teeth! Or perhaps your adventure holidays are about getting airborne, about parasailing, hang-gliding or micro-lighting, maybe parachuting or skydiving. Or bungee jumping… What’s better: adventure holidays that involve flinging yourself off a bridge with some stretchy rope tied to your legs and watching the ground rush up at you, or those in which you voluntarily leap from a plane and plunge to the earth, relying big time on that parachute opening before it’s too late? Different kinds of rushes. You be the judge. Both can make for a high on your adventure holidays.
Some head to the river and canyon outside Hoedspruit for Mohlatsi adventure holidays where kayaking is a main attraction of the Blyde Adventure Camp. Others prefer paddling on the ocean, and kayaking.co.za in Simon’s Town makes for a marvellous outing amongst the seals, whales and who knows what else that you might see on the other side of the waves.
Malmesbury is where you can take to the skies on one of the Aquila Microlight Safaris – in an open cockpit on the motorbike of the skies, they say microlighting is the closest you’ll come to the magic of flying under your own power. In Hazyview, the adrenaline junkies at Aviation Adventures will tell you something similar.
Those of us who love getting wet on our adventure holidays are familiar with the Scuba Addicts dive lodge in Umkomaas south of Durban – so famous for its shark dives that they say if you don’t see a shark on one of their outings they’ll give you your money back… Tiger, hammerhead, whitetip and Zambezi (bull) sharks – here you can get face to face with these predators. Whereas with Shark Diving Unlimited in Gans Bay they prefer that we watch the great whites from inside a cage… Awesome stuff!
Many opt for the Garden Route when it comes to their adventure holidays. Skydive Mossel Bay and Skydive Plettenberg Bay are two options for those who like bodysurfing in the wind, burning up the sky – or whose idea of wonderful adventure holidays includes gently floating after their ’chute has opened, before a roller coaster ride to the ground, complete with spins and stalls.
Choice of SA adventure holidays is mind-boggling

The Drakensberg is also a great tourist destination which is often overlooked. It offers such a wide variety of activities to partake in. These include hiking trails, tours, battlefields, birding, horse trails, wildlife, world heritage sites, fly fishing, 4X4 off-roading and museums. Accommodation choices also vary to accommodate tourists of different budgets. Drakensberg accommodation ranges from 5 star hotels and luxury game lodges, and to suit more budget conscious travellers there are lodges, inns, caravan parks, camping sites, small hotels and self catering facilities.
